Ao2- examples- 25 marks

Use the correct vocab- 4 quadrant

45 minutes to produce response

Introduction-Breif express your opinion
                    Identify you film institution
Pre-production, production, distribution (wide release) and exchange (how can i buy or watch)

Main- US v UK- link to me
          Disney v Momentum
Disney- Tron, Toy story
Momentum- Film4, Moon, Kick ass

Conclusion- What does the future hold?
                   Tech becomes cheaper
Watch at home/ on the move
In the future tech will become cheaper and then more films will be able to afford to film in 3D. Also people will want to watch films online instead of going to the cinema and then it will be hard for indie films to get noticed. Especially if major films take a blanket release as you wont notice that some film have even come out. But Companies that are in the Big six wil grow and will then buy out more screen in cinemas which will then put independent films at a disadvantage.

Arguements
  • Will make a lot of money through advertising
  • Both have established actors featured in the films
  • Both in the group of the Walt Disney group
  • Big budgets for both films

Kick ass

Hollywood film production.

Hollywood film production
  • Hollywood makes approximately 120 films a year.
  • High production values- high budget affords
  • Special effects
  • Actors
  • Great script
  • Exotic locations
  • New camera technology- camera work
Block busters
Block buster is a high budget production and is aimed at mass markets. It also mostly relies on vital merchandisings. No Block buster film gets to go ahead unless it can justify itself in terms of its TV spin-offs, squeals  merchandising, opportunities and DVD tie-in.

Spider man 2
-before: deals ($30m).
-Script and development cost a total of $10m and the script is only 5% of the total budget.
- Writer David Koepp netted an eight-figure pay-day.
- Prize winning novelist, Michael Chabon
- Likely uncredited but well paid script doctors were drafted in to re-write certain scenes.

Licensing cost them $20m.. Marvel owns the Spider man character, and has owned the character since Sony brought movie right in 1999. This caused ongoing bickering and ligation between Marvel and Sony. Because of this, it pushed the licensing price up even further. Stan Lee the co-creator of spider man acts as an executive producer on spider man 2. For this he gets paid $1m (£540,000)by Marvel. Stan threatened to sue for share of profits from licensing.

During the shoot ($100m)
Most of the money goes out to the stars of the movie, the director, and the producers. They are paid a traditional weekly wage for the length of the shoot.
Above the line: this costs the studios to be committed to paying before the cameras role.
They pay and costs:
  • Producers - $15million
  • Director- $10million- The director has less and less autonomy and is obliged to cut or shoot.
  • Below the line- $45million
  • The physical production expenses cast- $30million
The amount of cost after all of the editing was $70million and the special effects alone cost $65million. The lions share of the post-production budget is now spent on special effects and editing is a sizeable chunk and effects the  budget on block buster. It is one of the big spends that is growing fast. Music cost $5million and was no more than 2% of the budget. Danny Elfman composed the music for spider man 2 and did it for about $2million. Sony music soundtrack puts out the official soundtrack with tracks by Jetand Train.

The sell was $75million and the cost of prints and advertising was also $75million. The prints and advertising is not included in the actual production budget. This is because studios will spend more money on marketing the film rather than that making of the film which was $200million. Spider man is worth about $821million (£446million) worldwide!

Kick Ass.

Kick ass is a superhero comedy film and was based on the comic book of the name by John Romita jr and Mark Millar. The films actual release was March 25th 2010 in the UK and in the US was released April 16th 2010. The film was directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn and was also produced by Brad Pitt (actor), Kris Thykier, Adam Bohling, Traquin Pack, and David Rei. Brad Pitt also co-wrote the screen play along with Jane Glodman. The film is altogether 1 hour, 53 minutes. In all of the footage there is about 18 minutes that were deleted but if the film was a hit Matthew said he would do an extended cut. The film was released out on DVD and Blue ray in America August the 3rd 2010 and were released in the UK September 6th 2010. The film sold 1.4 million in the first week and one-third of these were blue ray disks. Kick ass was debuted as the number one on the DVD sales chart. The budget to the film was estimeted to be $30,000,000.  The opening weekend of the film brought in £3,881,704 and was shown in 402 screens, and in America it brought in $48,043,505 the film was a financial success.

Kick ass later then released a video game that was based on the movie, and the game was produced by WHA entertainment and Frozen code-base. It was first released through the app store to the iPhone and iPod touch. For other marketing before the film posters were released. There were posters of just the cover of the film and other posters that were released has just one of the characters on. This was so that the audience could relate more to each character and get to know what that character was about.

Kick ass the film tells us about and ordinary teenage boy who decides that he is going to become a real life superhero and calls himself 'kick ass'. Not only is he trying to become more popular but is also trying to impress a girl. He gets caught up in all sorts of situations, one being in a big fight with another superhero 'big daddy' who is a former cop . Big daddy is trying to bring down a drug company and owner 'lord Frank D'Amico' and has trained his daughter who is now eleven to be the ruthless  vigilante 'hit girl'. In the end they all work as a team to bring down frank but have to get out of the situation frank has put them in first, but hit girl is the real hero of the story. But Kick ass the film, despite its violence and black humour, generally had positive reviews!

The cast:
  • Aaron Johnson as David Dave Lizewski/Kick-Ass
  • Nicolas Cage as Damon Macready/Big Daddy
  • Chloe Grace Moretz as Mindy Macready/Hit-Girl
  • Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Chris D'Amico/Frank D'Amico's son/Red Mist
  • Mark Strong as Frank D'Amico
having a few well known actors/actresses helps a film sell a lot more as people will recognise the name and think of the previous film that the actor/actress has been in. If they have been in good films that the particular audience is aimed at likes them then its bring in the much more people to watch the film and buy all the merchandise that comes with it. Also by making Kick-ass a more attractive character also brings in more girls to see the action film and this also widens the audience.

Kick ass was filmed in several places, these places were Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (Dip 'N' Sip Donuts) Winston Churchill Secondary and other locations in the UK. These include Elstree Studios and the opening sequence with Nicolas Cage was filmed in a sewage plant in East London. The film got an 'R' rating by the MPAA, it was rate this because of the violence, strong language, drug use, nudity, and sexual scenes. It was rated a 15 by the BBFC and the director (Matthew Vaughn) felt that it was about right for the film but was a little confused when it was rated a PG in France. The film got huge amounts of awards/nominations, it got nominated for, teen choice awards (Choice Movie Actor: Action adventure, Choice movie villain, Choice movie: Action adventure, Choice movie breakout female, and choice movie breakout male ). It was also nominated at Peoples choice awards, The comedy awards, Young artist awards, and Critics choice awards. It was nominated in Empire awards and won the best British film and best newcomer awards. In the MTV awards kick ass won best breakout star and biggest bad-ass star, and was nominated for best fight. the star rating for the film is 7.9 stars.

Walt Disney which is shortened to Disney the the worlds biggest conglomerate in terms of revenue and was founded October 16th 1923. It was founded by the Disney brothers cartoon studio who were Roy and Walt Disney.Walt Disney productions were known as a leader in the American animation industry before it was diverted into a live-action film production, travel, and TV. The Walt Disney company expended and started divisions focused on theatre, radio, publishing, and on-line media. The company is best known for the products from its film studios named ' the Walt Disney motion pictures group' and still today are one of the most well known studios in Hollywood and most country's. Disney also own and operates the ABC broadcast television network. The most well known and earliest creation of Disney is of course Mickey Mouse, and is the official mascot for the Walt Disney company. It is also known as the creator of sleeping beauty, snow white and the 7 dwarfs, fantasia and many many more!

Walt Disney company was the famous that there has now been several Disneyland created and the most famous one in America. It was place created for anybody to have a good time no matter how old you are. It provides everything for everyone and attracted visitors all over the world and there are 14 parks all over the world. One of the major expansions was the monorail created in America 1959.  Disneyland was a big hit and still is, it is being made better and bigger all the time and i myself have been there 3 times. Its said to be one of the best lifetime experience and i sort of agree as it amazes you each time.

Cinema visit

In the October holidays i went to the Vue meridian cinemas to watch the film 'friends with benefits'. While i was at the cinema i noticed that they had 9 screenings showing all together, some bigger than others as the big ones were more for new releases. Also 2 out of the 9 screenings were 3D and all together within those 9 screens there are 2,391 seats, including VIP seats. VIP seats are located more in the middle viewing area and are there for people to enjoy their experience a lot more by having more room and comfier seats. Also before you go into screen they have a wide variety of foods and drinks available for you to take in.These foods include popcorn, ice-cream, pik 'n' mix, fizzy drinks, hot dogs, nachos, and many many more! Although they are expensive people still buy to get the whole cinema experience. Cinemas sell them that expensive to make up for all the lost profit that they lose by selling the movie tickets. The type of films genre that are available are horror, action, comedy, rom-com, and action. Having this wide range of genre makes audiences become wider and lets the cinema become more popular if it is available to lots of people.  Before any of the films are shown the cinema has to show a selective number of adverts/trailers. The sort of trailers that will be shown depend on the sort of movie you are going to see. This is cleverly done as it will courage the audience to come back.

Cost of tickets:
Adult £8.00
Teen 13-18 £6.35
Student £6.75
Child £5.95
Senior £5.95
3D screening additional:

Family £7.80
Family £ 23.80
Over 18s £1.05
VIP seating is an additional £1.70

First viewing of Jack (Lost)

Watching a short clip at the start of lost ans concentrating on jack as a character, below are what we saw from him and how his personality come across to us the audience.
  • Brave
  • Caring
  • Wants to help
  • Hero- saving woman by using CPR
  • Goes into survival mode- looking around everywhere
  • At first he walks around as though he is a clumsy character and then once he has found everyone he becomes focussed

  • Reassures people
  • Becomes the one everyone rely's on
  • Looks after himself last
  • Thinks ahead- keeps the alcohol for wounds instead of drinking it
  • Makes us (the audience) feel sort of safe
  • We trust him as a good guy as all we have seen from him has been good
  • Try's to calm and comfort people around him- this also makes the audience feel a bit more calmer about the situation that is happening
  • He see's saving people more as normal than something special as that is what his job includes- he holds his fear in
  • When we see him first as he stands up and pulls the bottle of alcohol out from his pocket we think of him as an alcoholic
  • well off- he is wearing a suit and looks to be a clean and tidy person
  • Young and attractive- audience will respond to him more
  • People in the clip respond to him more when they know that he is a doctor
  • He is more injured than we first think
  • At the beginning he looks to be vulnerable- camera shot is birds-eye view
  • Looks as though he is waking up- his pupils change
  • Jungle setting- lost
  • Camera viewing on the ground make the audience see it from jacks point of view

Hollywood the film industry

Major studios are vertically, horizontally and laterally integrated and are now part of massive media conglomerates which has created on 'oligopoly' in the film industry- big six

Vertically- own props like sounds, equipment, studios, and publicity.

High concept- SFX stars - special effects and stars

films are often sequels, prequels and remakes or based on a popular book.

Distribution window- know when to release a film-
Film brands that are successful in many ways:

  • DVD/blue-ray
  • on demand TV
  • network TV
  • internet downloads
  • soundtrack albums
  • video games
  • novelisatioins

Conglomerates will try to use synergy- marketing lots of things at the same time even though it has nothing to do with the film. It ties lots of things in as you known that brand works.
E.g. a soundtrack album could be produced by the record company, a novel can be produced and also a computer game can be produced etc.

Press junkels- distributors to generate press interest.

Saturation/blanket- where a films released across a huge number of cinemas.

Multiplexes- more profitable because they house a large number of screens under one roof. They can provide a more modern and viewer friendly experience.

High concept- selling the stars to talk.

Above the line- is a type of advertising through media such as television, cinema, radio, print, web banners, and web search engines to promote brands. This type of communication is conventional in nature and considered impersonal to costumers.

Moon

Moon was the first featured film that was directed by a commercial director. Duncan jones was the director or the film moon and he has also directed the film source code. Duncan jones was also known as zowie bowie, the son of david bowie and he co-wrote the script with nathan parker.
The film Moon was created for the actor sam rockwell who has been in many welll known films such as Iron man 2 and cowboys and aliens. Sam was born in California, but was raised by just his dad in San Fran Sisco. One of his first films that he did was horror film clownhouse and after that he then moved to New York so that he could get into a more bigger sort of acting career.
Moon was produced by Trudie Snyder who has worked with duncan before. the stage in which Moon was produced was stage 6 as this was the stage in where the films that are created there go out straight onto DVD. The budget for that film was $5m as Duncan Jones wanted it to be as cheap as possible so cut the production costs. This meant that he was limited on actors- as he only had 2, sam and his (made up) wife- and filmed all of it in a studio. Moon was oruduced at Shepperton studios, in which it was filmed in 33days. Jones used models instead of animation as it was much cheaper and was helped by Bill Pearson who made models for the film alien. the moon base was created as a full 360-degree set, being 85–90 feet (26–27 m) long and approximately 70 feet (21 m) wide. The robot in the film (GERTY) was designd to be on an overhead rail on the set. The pingpong scene was a mime and using CGI they then added the ball.

about me

My name is Mae Burton i am 16 years of age, i have blonde hair and brown eyes.

I decided to do media as i wanted to find out more about films and series, but more in depth and media studies allows me to do this.
i have only recently started sixth form (3 weeks into it) as i went to college first, but decided i didnt like it. At college i was studying photography, this included the history of photography, learning and working on computers with different photography programs, art lessons, video production and different styles of cameras with photography. It was interesting in some parts but just not what i wanted to do and i wasnt interested enough in it to carry it on for two years.

so now i have come back to lutterworth to study media studies, leisure studies, sociology, starter spannish and retake maths. i am looking forward to these next two years as it gives me a chance to study things that i actually want to learn about, and hopefully i will get a good grade out of it.
1. Do you think the audiences for most media texts do come “from all walks of life” or do
different kinds of people watch very different kinds of programme? Are there any examples of media texts that you can think of that do seem to have audiences of all kinds of people?
A) lots of films/series are watch by most of the puplic as they apeal to everyone in some way. different kinds of scocial groups watch different kinds of films as its the sort of thing that they are into. If people are more into dark kind of things like say gothic people then they would more want to experience a thrill movie rather then a rom-com. but programs like x-factor apeal to most people as it interes the whole publice in different way, some peoplewatch it for entertainment, some for information to look at how they can maybe getinto that kind of business, and some just do it for identification in themselves and compare themselves to others.

2. How much of your media experience occurs when you are on your own and how much
when you are with others?
if you are on your own then you are more likely to watch things at home, whereas if you were with a big group of people then you would more likely go out to the cinimas or experienceit in a different way.
3. How do you experience/consume media (i.e. watch or listen to it)?
i experience media by either going out with friends/family to watch new films or whatch them at home. i mostly watch films and series at home asi can do it in my own time and it wont cost me anything.

4. Are there any ways in which you share your experiences of the media with other people
who weren’t around when you experienced the text? List as many ways as you share
experiences (e.g. msn etc)
i share my experiences over facebook, text, calls, and generally talking with people in and out of school.

Audience theory

Exam speak
- The issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (specifically British) by international institution.
- The ways in which the canidates own experiences of media comsumption illustrate wider patterns and trends of audience behaviour.

Blumer- 4 ways
first- different kinds of peole, vocation, wealth, and cultrrual.
second- anonymous individuals, people of the mass audience so not know eachother.
third- little interaction of people, the oppertunity to mill, as do other people in the audience.
forth- coinsidence that we do things. People will communtcate to organise things.

Uses in gratifications
Watch things for entertainment, information, or identification.
